Established

2003

What happens?

This event is a celebration of the cultural and military customs that the Romans brought to York.

York was one of the most important Roman cities in Britain and for a period at the end of the 3rd century was the capital of the Roman Empire.

It was in York that the famous VIIII Legion disappeared, where Emperors Septimius Severus and Constantius Chlorus died and where Constantine The Great was proclaimed Emperor.

York's Roman history is fantastic and should be better understood and appreciated. The York Roman Festival will make an important contribution to that end with:

  • Military re-enactors in and marching around the city
  • Children's activities
  • Spirits of the Lost Legion ghost event
  • Roman talks
  • Living History camp
  • Romans versus Barbarians battle
  • Gladiators, Wrestling & Chariot Race
  • Music & dance
  • Crafts & stalls
'York Roman Festival was a Finalist in 'Best Festival/Event', 'Marketing Campaign' & 'Web Site' categories, at the York Tourism Awards 2005.'

Who will enjoy it?

The Festival aims to entertain and educate residents and visitors, particularly anyone with an interest in history, Romans or York. Children and families will thoroughly enjoy listening to talks and watching the displays. The kids will also have opportunities to dress up and become a part of the Roman army.
