York 50+ Festival
tbc
Established
2005 by the York Older People's Assembly, part of Better Government for Older People
What happens?
Over 100 events put on by and for people over 50, some, like the Model Boat Regatta, the Castle Mills Lock Open Day, Peterloo Poets reading poems for children, Jorvik, DIG, and the Barley Hall can be enjoyed by the whole family.
Local businesses get involved as well as major city theatres - having a festival with this focus presents enormous opportunities for creative marketing to the benefit of both the business and the 50+ customer. This year's major sponsors are the Foresters Friendly Society, Barnitts, B&Q and Ingram Solicitors. Contact Sue Lister with your ideas: 01904 488870.
If you would like to join walks and cycle rides around the city, or admire arts and crafts, or buy Fair Trade goods, or enjoy an afternoon's entertainment at the 50+ Festival Show (Theatre Royal), Songs and Suchlike at the Winning Post or a Cascade of Musical Memories at the Guidhall....then keep your eye open for the Festival Programme on the streets and in libraries in early September and on web links.
Who will enjoy it?
The York 50+ Festival aims to bring together the whole community in a celebration of the spirit of older people, their expertise, their wit and wisdom, their skills and their willingness to share their energy and time with others. No one needs to fear loneliness or boredom while this festival thrives - get to the taster sessions by hook or by crook and you may find yourself a hobby for the rest of the year! Visitors, enjoy what York has to offer and take the idea back to your own countries, towns and villages - all you need is a handful of people to seed the idea through the press and media and print the programme, local groups and businesses will do the rest once the 50+ Festival idea catches on!
