York Carnival

The 2010 Carnival will take place on Sunday 6 June

Established

2004

What happens?

This Summer, York is 'Going Wild'

This year, a jungle call will hail the start of summer, as York Carnival transforms the city into an urban jungle, alive with artists and musicians from the Yorkshire community.

The parade will spring into action at 1.00pm from the Minster Gardens. Hundreds will be involved, including children from local schools and youth groups showcasing a vibrant array of 'wild' costumes, masks and musical instruments made during our Outreach programme. You too can 'Go Wild' at our mask making workshops and then join in the procession!

When the parade reaches the Lion's Den on Parliament Street, the festivities will already be in full jungle swing. This stage will be packed full of acts all day, with a performance from Section 60 as well as some of the best loved entertainers in York. There'll be cheerleaders, dancers, singers, drummers and much more. In front of the Lion's Den you will find Safari Island where voluntary groups and local craftsmen will display their wares.

Deeper into the wilderness of York, the Watering Hole, in St Helen's Square, will hold performances from acoustic bands and traditional music groups, right through to belly dancing and world music. So come and witness these brilliant entertainers thrive in their natural habitat!
For the more adventurous explorers amongst you, come and discover the Workshop Jungle situated in St Sampson's Square. This year, the Jungle will be dense with exciting workshops and fun activities. If you want to be part of a percussion band or learn a new dance, then shelter in the marquee and enjoy the opportunity to learn the behaviour of these wild performers. Cubs' Corner will also be situated in here, there will be face painting, workshops and many other activities.

Finally, King's Square will house the Bee Hive; our new youth stage showcasing York's young talent. Wherever their talent lies, whether it is singing, dancing, acting, musical performance of poetry reading, the Hive will provide a platform to show it off.

So on Sunday 6th June 2010, York Carnival Goes Wild, and we would love for you to come and experience this adventure with us! A perfect outing for the family with attractions for all ages, it'll be the perfect start to your summer!
